Our speakers will be Ellen Dinerman and Jim Perdue from the organization "Compassion and Choices." They will be providing information on the "Richard E. Israel and Roger 'Pip' Moyer End-of-Life-Option Act" which was introduced in both the 2015 and 2016 Maryland Legislative Sessions and will be re-introduced for consideration during the 2017 legislative session. Designed after an Oregon law (which has been in effect since 1997) and similar to one recently passed in California, the Maryland Act allows a physician to prescribe life-ending medication for a competent, terminally ill adult to self-administer, provided that the patient goes through a rigorous process involving multiple requests witnessed by two individuals, evaluation by at least two physicians, and has a prognosis of less than six months to live.
